On Saturday, June 14, 2025, approximately 40 residents of Peabody and surrounding communities came out to Peabody Square to protest the cartoonishly corrupt Trump Administration. They joined 12 million Americans across the United States who took to main streets and city squares as part of the broader “No Kings” movement.

As the President wasted U.S. tax dollars throwing himself a birthday parade, these protesters came out to declare that they would not willingly give up their rights. Protesters held signs that defended immigrants and immigration, criticized deportation efforts, and defended democracy and the rule of law.

The location of this standout, in front of the Peabody Civil War monument, was chosen not only for its visibility but also for its symbolism. The monument was dedicated in 1881 in what was then South Danvers with an inscription, “The Town to Her Sons Who Died in the Great Rebellion that the Union Might Be Preserved and Liberty Secured for All.” Atop is a statue of Liberty with broken shackles in one hand and a sheathed sword in the other.

Organizers said that local events such as the one in Peabody help connect people with their neighbors and helps build local resistance to authoritarianism. The standout was organized by local volunteers, progressive and Democratic activists, as well as a candidate for Peabody City Councillor, at-Large, Tristan R. Brown.
